My favourite book is Alice in Wonderland and there is a quote in the book that has always resonated with me and never more so when I feel a little lost with life.
Alice: “Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”
The Cheshire Cat: “That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.”
Alice: “I don’t much care where.”
The Cheshire Cat: “Then it doesn’t much matter which way you go.”
Alice: “…so long as I get somewhere.”
The Cheshire Cat: “Oh, you’re sure to do that, if only you walk long enough.”
I always took away from this quote that when we don't know where we are going then it doesn't really matter which path we take as all paths will eventually lead us somewhere, and to me that somewhere was interpreted as where we are meant to be and where we belong. The only difference with the paths is that you might encounter different scenery.
So why is it, that when we are lost or not sure what we are doing with our life do we become anxious and stressed? Is it because we had a plan and it hasn't worked? Is it because we thought we were in control and we are realising that maybe we weren't? Is it because we fear the unknown? Is it because we have set our expectations against what society tells us what our life should be?
So what do you do?
Pick a path, any path and enjoy every God damn minute. What matters is that you
Keep moving,
Keep living,
Keep finding the joy in your life,
Keep loving yourself and treating yourself with compassion and kindness,
Keep paying attention to the nudges and feelings inside you that are guiding you along the way.
And above all remain grateful for what you have
Being lost is like being in limbo between the old version of you that is dying because you are realising you don't want what you once did and the new version of you that is birthing in which you give yourself permissions to want what you want now.
So honour this moment of your life. Accept this moment of your life. Welcome this moment of your life.
You don't have to have it all figured out and us all living under the illusion that we do or that we should is bullshit. It is good to have goals and it is good to have plans but not to the extreme that we become so rigid in them that there is no flow or movement for change, surprises or opportunities
Ask yourself what do I want? What do I want to do today? Who do I want to spend my time with today? What do I want to experience today?
And even if you can't answer what you want and can only answer what you don't want then see the beauty in that too, because the more that you become aware of what you don't want, then the quicker that will lead you to what you do want.
The answers that continue to come to you again and again are the ones that will guide you and weave the path to take. They will draw you to your people, take you to the places that you need to visit and provide you with the choices that you need to make.
Accept being lost and in that accept the beauty and excitement of the journey and finding your path, over and over again.
If you want some help or support along your path or working out the answers then please do get in touch with me. I would be honoured to help you.
